The Arts and Crafts
Movement was one of the most influential and far-reaching design movements of
modern times. It began in Britain around 1880 and it lasted until the advent of
Liberty.
It 'was a moment
full of ideals, born out of concern for the effects of industrialization: from
design to tradition and to the lives of ordinary people. In response, it
established a new set of principles for living and working. It supported the
reform of art at all levels and elevated the house to work of art.
The Movement took
its name from the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society, founded in 1887, and it
reflects the thinking of companies, laboratories and manufacturers.
Its pioneering
spirit and the value placed on the quality of materials and design have shaped
the world we live in today.
Personally I feel
very much the legacy left to us by these first designers who before us have
taken the road of art applied to industry. This is because it can have more
quality and care similar to the work done by a craftsman, piece by piece.
People like William Morris taught us to work and now they would surely draw as
we do with computers and softwares but with the mind always full of the same
ideals of respect and love for the past but with the desire for progress in
this field of art.
