ARKIVIA BOOK ARTDECO STYLE TEXTURES 1
From ART & CRAFTS to LIBERTY, from LIBERTY to ART DECO
Change through mutation, change through
breaking.
IMPRESSIONISM and the VICTORIAN
DECORATIVISM expressed in large part by ARTS
& CRAFTS are two faces of the same need: to change the vision of the
stereotype of realism. The first fracturing every detail with pure visual
sensation, the second by retracing every detail in a schematic way, closer to
the possibilities of creating industrial processes and productions.
They seem to be antipodal but are the
simplest answers that both PAINTING and DESIGN give to the same problem and the
will to change: to conquer full freedom away from the schemes of the past.
These two starting points mark the further development of each of the two
disciplines, with the same sentiment and the same search to free themselves
from the classic schemes and to find a freedom of expression never known
before. Painting proceeds through many
"...ISMS" and many incredible figurative hypotheses while design
finds the syntheses of nature closer to production needs, embracing geometry
and abandoning naturalism: first by ordering into rigid patterns the natural
multiplicity and this is ARTS & CRAFTS.Then, channelling the naturalistic
development in curved, soft and eye-pleasing forms, the design becomes ART
NOUVEAU.Finally, geometry takes over, frees itself
from naturalism and produces simpler and more elegant forms without the need to
be similar to nature while following the same precepts of order, symmetry,
regularity, summarizing the too many naturalistic details geometric syntheses.
Design becomes ART DECO' and develops over a period of time from 1920 to 1940.It is characterized by the extreme
geometric synthesis, refined and elegant. References to nature are rare and
episodic but always tasteful.
The decoration has become modern, curved
lines intertwine with rectangular planes and lines in an interlacing that
stands out more in architecture and the
realization of design objects.
In the end, this style was shattered by the
austerity of World War II and an era of beauty and modernity in equilibrium
between mind and heart was ended.
